Helen Komatsu

biography

All my work explores our relationship with our environment, particularly the natural world.

My ceramic work is inspired by the many fascinating qualities of clay, the material itself being my major source of my inspiration. I am attracted to both natural and man-made patterns that repeat themselves on large and small scales. I like to use pattern in unexpected ways, enhanced through the use of oxides, stains and slips. I combine slab construction, modelling, pinching, piercing, extruding, sprigging and stamping. All my pieces are individual; every work must be an adventure.

I grew up in New York and have also lived in Madrid and the Middle East. In 1996, I co-founded the Canterbury-based international business and writing consultancy www.davincipr.com, which I ran in partnership for twelve years. I now live in the countryside near Ash, Canterbury and work out of a chalet in my garden which I have converted into a studio and pottery. I am currently studying at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) Canterbury, for a BA (Hons) in Fine Art.

I am a member of the Kent Potters Association (KPA) and South East Artists (SEAS). Galleries where I'm currently exhibiting include the The Joanne Harmer Gallery, Deal; Castle Street Gallery, Canterbury; and the West End House Gallery, Smarden.
